About Soalheiro

Founded in 1974 by the Cerdeira family with the planting of the first continuous Alvarinho vineyard in Melgaço, Soalheiro has grown in a territory in the far north of Portugal — within the Monção e Melgaço sub-region  internationally recognised for its unique climate and the singular expression of this grape variety. In 1995, it became the first producer to release a 100% Alvarinho sparkling wine on the Iberian Peninsula, an early sign of an innovative spirit that still defines the estate.

Today, as specialists in Alvarinho, Soalheiro works with a network of more than 200 partner growers through the Soalheiro Growers’ Club — cultivating over 700 plots across the sub-region. Together, they combine deep territorial roots, family continuity, proven winemaking excellence and a distinctive identity. Recent recognition includes a Best in Show at the 2025 Decanter World Wine Awards and more than 20 wines rated above 90 points by Wine Advocate.

The sommelier is the person who gives a wine its voice at the table. For fifty years, at Soalheiro in Melgaço, we have been crafting wines with a profound sense of place, but it is the sommelier who brings that story to life for the guest. Supporting Ones to Watch is our way of investing in the next generation of professionals who will help bring Portuguese wine and Alvarinho further into the world.”
