Inspire the next generation of sommeliers

Choosing a career as a sommelier is not always an obvious chose for those starting out in the world of work.

However, joining a team of sommeliers at restaurants around the country can be very rewarding as it opens up the world of wine, unearths its passionate people and reveals the amazing vineyards of the world.

We’ve teamed up with renowned Italian family wine producer MASI to nurture a new generation of sommeliers in UK with the launch of MASI FUTURE SOMMELIER 20-24.

The search is on for young staff members, those aged 20-24, who have just begun working in hospitality, and would like the opportunity to discover more and begin their journey to learn about the opportunities in wine.

Inclusivity and inspiration

The MASI FUTURE SOMMELIER 20-24 is a new initiative in hospitality designed to be welcoming and supportive. The program will showcase the wonderful opportunities open to young people who may not yet have considered the benefits of joining the world of wine. It is created to welcome new talent, inspire those from diverse backgrounds to consider a career as a sommelier and to engage a new generation of hospitality staff.

Nominations

Candidates can apply directly for the MASI FUTURE SOMMELIER 20-24 or may be nominated by Head Sommeliers and Senior Sommeliers working at the restaurant. If you’d like to nominate a colleague for the program simply email us.

HOW TO TAKE PART

In the first instance each candidate will need to complete a simple online application form.

JOIN WINE TASTING MASTERCLASS on VALPOLICELLA (Verona)

Candidates will be invited to join an exclusive MASI FUTURE SOMMELIER 20-24 wine tasting masterclass, led by Giacomo Boscaini, export manager at MASI in central London on Monday 24 June, 3-5pm.

The 2hr masterclass will help candidates develop their own wine tasting skills, learn about the world of wine production, in particular the historic estate of MASI in northern Italy – famous for Valpolicella – and explain the career opportunities open to all.

After the masterclass each candidate will select their own bottle of MASI wine they particularly enjoyed or one that intrigued them to learn more.

Candidates will then upload an original photo and/or <1min video including #MASIFutureSomm @masiwines @berkmann_wine @sommelieredit.

Simply explain the wine they selected from the MASI range, why they like it and propose a dish that they think it would pair well with.

WIN
a TRIP to MASI
in ITALY

In November three candidates will visit the historic winery and vineyards of MASI, all expenses paid.

Visitors to MASI will enjoy a gourmet wine pairing dinner at the icon estate and witness the technique of appassimento – where the grapes are laid out on bamboo racks in special drying rooms to partially dry the grapes ahead of pressing.

The judges will select winners who they believe have been most inspired so far to win the trip to Italy.

About MASI

With roots in Valpolicella Classica, Masi produces and distributes Amarone and other premium wines inspired by the values of the Venetian territories.

The use of native grapes and autochthonous methods, and the research and experimentation carried out by its Technical Group, make it one of the most famous producers of high-quality Italian wines in the world.

The Masi story begins in 1772, when the Boscaini family carried out their first harvest in the prestigious vineyards in “Vajo dei Masi”, a valley in the heart of the Valpolicella Classica region. After more than 200 years of passionate winemaking the company is still in family hands, run by the sixth, seventh and eighth generations.

A benchmark in the art of producing Amarone at a world level, Masi constantly innovates and passes on its expertise in the Appassimento method, which has been practised since the time of the Ancient Romans.

For more than forty years, Masi has carried out an ambitious project of development for historic wineries, collaborating with:

·      Conti Serego Alighieri, descendants of the poet Dante and owners of the Valpolicella estate with the longest history and tradition

·      Conti Bossi Fedrigotti, the prestigious brand from Trentino

·      Canevel, producers of top-quality sparkling wines in Valdobbiadene.

Masi also owns the organically run estates of Poderi del Bello Ovile in Tuscany and Masi Tupungato in Argentina.

The Group makes wines that are recognised and appreciated in 140 countries. Masi is also a partner in groups and associations that promote high quality Italian products internationally, such as: Fondazione Altagamma, Comitato Leonardo, Istituto Grandi Marchi, and Amarone Families.
