Young Sommeliers Competition 2025

Friday 28 March @ 09:00 - 17:00 GMT

Organised by the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs in Great Britain since 2008, this competition is divided into three segments: theory, service, and blind tasting.

The theory section is a one-hour written exam testing extensive knowledge of wine, production methods, laws, viticulture, and vinification, as well as spirits, beers, ales, ciders, ports, and sherry.

The service segment evaluates practical skills such as decanting wine, glass preparation, and tray handling. Champagne service requires controlled pouring and engaging with the Judge, who acts as a diner. Contestants also respond to questions on complex menu elements, wine pairings (offering both Old and New World suggestions), and topics like grape varieties, vintages, and regions. Blind spirit identification is also part of the service.

The blind tasting segment involves assessing six wines based on sight, smell, and taste to identify their color, age, alcohol content, origin, and appellation. The competition follows the Master Sommelier Advanced Examination format, with scoring based on deductive reasoning.

The competition aims to support and encourage young professionals while raising funds for wine education. To find out more about the Young Sommelier Competition please contact the organiser.
