With a dancer\u2019s grace and a thirst for discovery, she\u2019s shaking up the wine world\u2014one glass at a time.<\/h1>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always worked in hospitality,\u201d says Emma Denney, head sommelier at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.claridges.co.uk\/?gclsrc=aw.ds&amp;gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=16695641516&amp;gbraid=0AAAAADu7iKN32yKnWvxj9ieUz6oOF7aZ0&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwjL3HBhCgARIsAPUg7a4zpIBEvlK6oPA4PE2y4SkGb9sv9_0HtqwFFzjq-QYHisQYhErRzUwaAqgzEALw_wcB\">Claridge\u2019s<\/a> London and <a href=\"https:\/\/sommelieredit.com\/top-100-sommeliers\/results-2025\/\">Top 100 Sommelier UK<\/a>. \u201cI started washing dishes as a teenager, then took a job at a wine bar simply because I needed work.\u201d What she didn\u2019t realise then was that she was stepping into a world that would become her lifelong passion.<\/p>\n<p>While working at the wine bar, Denney enrolled in an in-house wine course. \u201cIt was a moment of enlightenment,\u201d she recalls. \u201cI had no idea how vast and deep the wine world was\u2014how much there was to learn and how far you could go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9534 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/sommelieredit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/CLA-PEOPLE-EMMA-DENNEY-01.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"690\" height=\"586\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sommelieredit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/CLA-PEOPLE-EMMA-DENNEY-01.jpg 690w, https:\/\/sommelieredit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/CLA-PEOPLE-EMMA-DENNEY-01-300x255.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At the time, New Zealand wines dominated the scene. \u201cI was hungry for knowledge,\u201d she says. \u201cThen I watched the documentary <em>Somm<\/em>, and a light went on. I realised I didn\u2019t want to be a general manager\u2014wine was my thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Inspired by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.camdouglasms.com\/\">Cameron Douglas<\/a> (New Zealand\u2019s first and only Master Sommelier,and chair judge for <a href=\"http:\/\/Top Sommeliers100 New Zealand\">Top Sommeliers100 New Zealand<\/a> ), Denney sought his advice. \u201cI asked him, \u2018How do I become you?\u2019\u201d His answer was clear: \u201cGet your WSET qualifications, then move on to the Court of Master Sommeliers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That conversation marked a turning point. \u201cIf I wanted to reach that level, I had to leave New Zealand.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The great thing about my job is that every day is different. You never know what guests will ask for\u2014there\u2019s always something new happening.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Denney\u2019s first year in London was spent at La Petite Maison in Mayfair, where she studied wine intensively on her days off. She later held roles at The Clove Club and Davies and Brook at Claridge\u2019s. When the latter closed, she embraced the challenge of opening Restaurant St. Barts. \u201cIt had a smaller budget,\u201d she says, \u201cbut I loved the sustainable ethos and the opportunity to build something from the ground up.\u201d Her efforts earned the restaurant a \u201cBest Short Wine List\u201d award.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9540 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/sommelieredit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/CLA-CLARIDGES-RESTAURANT-FOOD-SPRING25-05.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"690\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sommelieredit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/CLA-CLARIDGES-RESTAURANT-FOOD-SPRING25-05.jpg 690w, https:\/\/sommelieredit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/CLA-CLARIDGES-RESTAURANT-FOOD-SPRING25-05-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When Claridge\u2019s called her back\u2014this time as head sommelier\u2014Denney didn\u2019t hesitate. Today, she oversees two restaurants and leads a team of six sommeliers. Despite Claridge\u2019s reputation for luxury, she says the clientele is wonderfully diverse. \u201cWe serve the extremely wealthy and guests who simply want the experience. While traditional French and Italian wines are popular, there\u2019s definitely a push for mid-range selections. Everything on the list is delicious,\u201d she promises.<\/p>\n<p>Denney is also attuned to shifting trends. \u201cPeople are tightening their wallets and drinking less. No- and low-alcohol options are growing fast, so we\u2019re expanding our alcohol-free cocktail collection and offering more wines by the glass.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>She\u2019s particularly excited about the rise of New World wines. South African wines are fantastic alternatives to Burgundy. I want to bring more New World options to Claridge\u2019s\u2014there\u2019s so much quality out there.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Her personal favorites? \u201cI love Austrian wines and fresh, zippy reds from Germany. Orange wines and longer skin-contact styles are also gaining traction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-9546 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/sommelieredit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/CLA-CLARIDGES-RESTAURANT-10.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"690\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sommelieredit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/CLA-CLARIDGES-RESTAURANT-10.jpg 690w, https:\/\/sommelieredit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/CLA-CLARIDGES-RESTAURANT-10-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And when she\u2019s off duty? \u201cI\u2019m drinking a lot of beer and cider. Finer ciders are great alternatives to wine\u2014they share so many similarities. I love English craft beers, and I\u2019m lucky to live near several microbreweries in Hackney. But wine is still my first love.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Denney\u2019s role at one of London\u2019s most iconic hotels might seem steeped in tradition, but she\u2019s proof that innovation is alive and well. \u201cThe great thing about my job is that every day is different.
