Often they have the added bonus of being lower in alcohol.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/konetzki.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jan Konetzki<\/a>, leading sommelier and wine expert, paired a selection of German wines\u00a0 at <span style=\"color: var(--wpex-text-2);\">Chinese hot spot <\/span><a style=\"text-decoration: var(--wpex-link-text-decoration);\" href=\"https:\/\/www.meiume.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mei Ume<\/a> in<span style=\"color: var(--wpex-text-2);\"> London with the help of a <\/span><span style=\"color: var(--wpex-text-2);\">group of London sommeliers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: var(--wpex-text-2);\">From sparkling to sweet,\u00a0 Sauvignon to Pinot Noir they tested their palates and came up with some great matches<\/span><span style=\"color: var(--wpex-text-2);\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Konetzki finds this kind of exercise \u201cvery useful. Bringing food and wine together in a workshop environment, to first taste the wines and then give sommeliers freedom to explore the wines and flavours in their own time, doesn\u2019t happen often and it opens us up to discover, learn and share our impressions.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The menu kicked off with Miso soup, followed Seaweed salad with a sesame vinaigrette and a char siu bun with char siu sauce filling.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2174\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2174\" style=\"width: 980px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2174\" src=\"https:\/\/sommelieredit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/German-wine-tasting.jpg\" alt=\"German wine tasting\" width=\"980\" height=\"653\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sommelieredit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/German-wine-tasting.jpg 980w, https:\/\/sommelieredit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/German-wine-tasting-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sommelieredit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/German-wine-tasting-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 980px) 100vw, 980px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2174\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">German wine tasting with Chinese food (credit: Wines of Germany UK)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The wines tasted were a <strong>German Sekt<\/strong>, the classic sparkling wine made from Reisling, a Sauvignon Blanc and Sp\u00e4tlese Riesling. Konetzki described the Sekt from Andreas Bender as a \u2018great all-rounder\u2019, and his team of sommelier tastersng found the sparkler stood up well to the umami-led miso soup.<\/p>\n<p>A <strong>barrel-fermented Sauvignon Blanc<\/strong> from Oliver Zeter \u2013 fruity but delicately smoky \u2013 was also a versatile pairing option and a firm favourite with tasters: \u201cthis is definitely a wine that doesn\u2019t ask if it can enter the club, it just walks in,\u201d said Jan.<\/p>\n<h3>Matching with dim sum<\/h3>\n<p>Steamed dim sum is a favourite Asian choice for many, however the variety of flavours and textures can prove a challenge when it comes to matching with wine.<\/p>\n<p>The selection from Mei Ume included har gau, char siu, mushrooms, black vinegar, chilli oil \u2013 no mean feat when it comes to the perfect flavour combination but however this team of top sommeliers felt that the <strong>Pinot Noir<\/strong>, known in German as Sp\u00e4tburgunder, from Ziereisen, was &#8220;more Burgundian in style than classic Baden,&#8221; according to Jan.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Lithe, elegant and a great match for the dim sum selection with its varied flavour combinations. Generally, when you think German wine you think white but reds from the warmer regions are lush and light&#8221;, he added.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2176\" src=\"https:\/\/sommelieredit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Chinese-food-selection.jpg\" alt=\"German wine x Asian food\" width=\"980\" height=\"653\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sommelieredit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Chinese-food-selection.jpg 980w, https:\/\/sommelieredit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Chinese-food-selection-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sommelieredit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Chinese-food-selection-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 980px) 100vw, 980px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Wines tasted<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>2019 Riesling, Deutscher Sekt, Andreas Bender, Mosel<\/li>\n<li>2020 Sauvignon Blanc, Fum\u00e9, Oliver Zeter, Pfalz<\/li>\n<li>2018 Riesling, Reiler Mullay-Hofberg Sch\u00e4f Sp\u00e4tlese, Thorsten Melsheimer, Mosel<\/li>\n<li>2018 Pinot Noir, Schulen, Ziereisen, Baden<\/li>\n<li>2019 Lemberger, Steinwiege, Schnaitmann, W\u00fcrttemberg<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Next up on the menu, a Chinese classic, Sesame and prawn toast with sweet chilli sauce. The ripe, juicy fruit character of Thorsten Melsheimer\u2019s Sp\u00e4tlese, with its notes of wild strawberry, peaches and lemon leaf, made it a great partner for the prawn toast, complementing the meat of the prawns and the sesame sweetness.<\/p>\n<p>The final dish \u2013 delicious duck rolls with hoi sin sauce \u2013 was the went spectacularly with a native German varietal, Lemberger (also known as Blaufr\u00e4nkisch).<\/p>\n<p>Jan highlighted the &#8220;plush plum notes, with an undercurrent of rooibos tea. Lemberger is often over-looked,&#8221; he commented, &#8220;but it is very food friendly. A particularly popular match for the duck rolls.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Next time you fancy dim sum, follow the advice of the experts.
