Proclaimed the best vintage of the century, is 2022 worth investing in, or not? Here&#8217;s what you need to know.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The 2022 vintage is being cited as possibly one of the best of this century so far, and if the prices being released currently by the ch\u00e2teaux are anything to go by buyer will have to put their money where their mouth is if they want to get their hands on some.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liv-ex.com\/\">LivEx<\/a>\u2019s, latest report, \u201cCynics are speculating that the ch\u00e2teaux may be intentionally overpricing their wines to protect (or even increase) their brand value amidst a struggling fine wine market.\u201d Sommeliers are tipping that the prices will be much higher and, whilst the feeling is that 2022 will be classic, caution is key.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2633\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2633\" style=\"width: 1137px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2633 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/sommelieredit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Top-performing-LB200-sub-indices.png\" alt=\"Bordeaux En Primeur prices\" width=\"1137\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sommelieredit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Top-performing-LB200-sub-indices.png 1137w, https:\/\/sommelieredit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Top-performing-LB200-sub-indices-300x166.png 300w, https:\/\/sommelieredit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Top-performing-LB200-sub-indices-1024x567.png 1024w, https:\/\/sommelieredit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Top-performing-LB200-sub-indices-768x426.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1137px) 100vw, 1137px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2633\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The best performing ch\u00e2teax princes in recent years<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>James Lloyd, head sommelier at Gordon Ramsay<\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/sommelieredit.com\/top-100-sommeliers\/results-2023\/\">Top 2023100 Sommeliers Inspiration<\/a> award winner, says, &#8220;For me personally this campaign excites me. There seems to be genuine quality throughout, often brought out by difficult wine making conditions. In particular St. Emilion and Pauillac.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He continues, &#8220;What excites me is the concentration in the wines,\u00a0 the classic austere lines, good acidity giving a small nod to the traditional styles of past. This leads me to think these wines will be very much for the long-term, especially at the upper echelons of the Bordeaux hierarchy. Pricing is definitely on the steep side but worth the wait in either for drinking or investment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2654\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2654\" style=\"width: 591px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2654 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/sommelieredit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/James-Lloyd-Bordeaux.jpg\" alt=\"James Lloyd Bordeaux\" width=\"591\" height=\"592\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sommelieredit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/James-Lloyd-Bordeaux.jpg 591w, https:\/\/sommelieredit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/James-Lloyd-Bordeaux-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/sommelieredit.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/James-Lloyd-Bordeaux-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 591px) 100vw, 591px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2654\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">James Lloyd, Head Sommelier, Restaurant Gordon Ramsay<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lloyd explains, &#8220;At Gordon Ramsay Restaurants we have entered but tentatively, not going too overboard as pricing will not necessarily offer the best value to our guests. This means that we have been a little restrained, however always worth having a good selection available from, what I see to be, a great vintage.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The commentary from LivEx reports that, \u201cAccording to our <a href=\"https:\/\/sommelieredit.com\/the-inside-track-on-bordeaux-en-primeur-2023\/\">Bordeaux En Primeur<\/a> survey results, merchants initially anticipated an average increase of 7.7% in ex-n\u00e9gociant prices compared to last year. However, the current campaign average is almost double that, with ex-n\u00e9gociant prices of wines released so far rising 14% on average.\u201d However, some big names that have released their prices already, have gone way over that average; Ch\u00e2teau Ang\u00e9lus (St. Emilion) is +37% up in comparison to 2021, Ch\u00e2teau Gran Puy-Ducasse (Paulliac) +31% and Ch\u00e2teau Palmer (Margaux) +28% in the same period.<\/p>\n<p>What does this mean for sommeliers and wine buyers in hospitality wanting to purchase 2022 Bordeaux\u2019s? \u00a0Number one they are going to have to rely on the knowledge of their trusted merchants when it comes where to invest. Few sommeliers can afford the outlay or store quantities of En Primeur wines today in their establishments. As <strong>Eric Zweibel, director of wine at The Samling<\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/sommelieredit.com\/top-100-sommeliers\/results-2023\/\">2023 Top 100 Sommeliers Legend<\/a>, comments, \u201cBordeaux is a very difficult today. 2022 looks like it will be a fantastic vintage. I do need to say that it&#8217;s difficult to serve Bordeaux in restaurants these days because very high prices and style.
